Aims and Objectives
You will be drawing from an exciting still life and selecting areas of it to concentrate on. We will be asking questions, through making sketches about what makes for an effective composition? We will investigate lighting and shadows and introduce some key concepts in the effective use of a sketchbook. We will analyse some key works of Art that illustrate a wide variety of approaches to drawing. Finally we will work on a more conclusive final drawing that demonstrates your learning.

Colour is of course an endlessly complex science that Artists have been exploring for centuries. However it is an area that is overlooked more and more. Of course we can all be intuitive with colour and that is how some people want to approach colour. However I believe that basic knowledge of colour theory will be of great use to an Artist, especially on the days when it is a struggle. The course starts with some colour theory based on Johannes Ittens seven colour contrasts from his book on the Science of Colour. Following some highly controlled, clinical experiments students will look at relevant Art works where these colour contrasts are occurring. Sketchbooks will be used to document progress throughout. The final stage of the project will be to develop individual projects in which colour is carefully thought about. The outcome could be either landscape, still life or figurative.
Cost: £280 per person (includes basic materials)
Maximum of 5 students per class
An essential part of our skill in Art is the ability to understand and manipulate space. The course will start by exploring the works of Artists who really excel in exploiting some of the ‘indicators of space’. Sketchbooks will be used to explore individual’s development and ideas as well as document, both visually and written, their understanding of purpose and meaning. Each student will build their own sculpture using objects etc that they will explore through lighting, drawing, painting and photography. Students will conclude this project with a large tonal drawing made in graded chalks having learnt some key principles in the rendering of space.
Cost: £400 per person (including basic materials
Maximum 5 students per class
